Does Using Biogas Lead to Sustainable Development?

Today the world is facing a crisis from the outbreak of COVID-19, forest fires to climatic changes. It seems like nature is being highly exploited, and it’s time to bring in positive changes to our lifestyles and life decisions. One such decision is turning towards sustainable developmental plans. So, what is this sustainable development? Sustainable development is finding methods to satisfy the needs of the present without harming the future.

  • Green land/ wetlands
  • Crop rotations

We have two sources of energies one is renewable and the other nonrenewable. So the renewable sources of energy are freely available in nature and are never going to end. On the other hand, nonrenewable energy sources have limitations and take thousands of years for regeneration. Opting for the abundant source in nature is always the best decision, and using Biogas is one such option.

What is Biogas?

The process of decomposition of organic waste generates biofuel or greenfuel. There is an increasing demand for this biogas as people are opting for sustainable options. So, the biofuel created is methane . Animal waste, leftover food, green waste, organic waste, etc., is put into a pit, and its further breakdown to make an anaerobic environment with zero oxygen. Then it further releases a blend of gases along with carbon dioxide.

Benefits of Biogas :

  • The installation of biogas will help manage and reuse organic waste, animal waste, and food waste. It will further help in keeping the environment pollution free.
  • The danger of methane emission is reduced as it is being used as a biofuel, converting it into CO2.
  • Biogas has the versatility factor as it can be used as electric power, heat power, or fuel.
  • Biogas not just has economic benefits, it also has many ecological advantages. The usage of this as heat, fuel, or any power form saves nature from dangerous CO2.
  • The digestion process’s leftover can be used as mineral nutrients as it is an amazing fertilizer.
  • It is just the perfect alternative for your LPG. And the installation of a biogas plant for more significant infrastructure, transportation fuel is now being possible.

The Drawback of Biogas: 

  • One of the major disadvantages of biogas is that its implementation is not much efficient.
  • The government is hesitant to invest in the Biogas plant.
  • Biofuel is not entirely pure fuel. Hence it contains impurities, which causes erosion of machinery if used as an energy fuel. However, it’s suitable for a kitchen stove and lamps.
  • As it’s a renewable source, it totally depends on nature. Basically, for the decomposition and digestion process, a minimum of 37°C temperature is a must. Hence it cannot process in cold weather and requires external heat energy for consistent supply.
  • Raw materials that is food waste, animal waste is king for generating biogas. If you are building a biogas plant somewhere where there is not much access to this waste, then it is a waste of money.
